April Events

Please join us at Casa Alma for these upcoming events:

* Saturday, April 13 workday from 9:30-12:30pm followed by an optional pot-luck lunch. All are welcome to help us create garden beds, plant, clear debris, work on paths, and develop our urban farm.

* Saturday, April 27 Community Celebration and Open House from 2:00-5:00pm. Enjoy live music, food, workshops, and time to tour the houses and visit the animals.

Good Friday Downtown Stations

Join us for an ecumenical public witness on 3/29 from 5:30-6:30pm beginning at the Federal Courthouse at W. Main and Ridge Streets. Walking the Way of Justice will lead us to consider the passion and death of Jesus in light of the suffering and injustice many experience today. We hope to see you there!

A Community Effort

At Casa Alma, the Charlottesville Catholic Worker, houses of hospitality are supported through tax-deductible donations from local Catholics, social justice activists, and extended community members. Through God's grace and the participation of many, funds have been raised to purchase three neighboring city houses. Two houses provide a safe refuge for low-income families and families who would otherwise be homeless. The third is the community house where pot-luck suppers and other events are held, and it serves as the residence for the full-time volunteers.

Core community

Laura, Steve, Emily, Anna and Ella Brown. We are inspired by our Catholic faith and our belief that the world is essentially a place of abundance, a place in which everyone’s basic needs can be met. Developing hospitality houses and a sustainable living center is our way of answering the call to love others as we love ourselves. We find inspiration in the Catholic Worker movement: homes of hospitality and farms, work for social justice and care for the poor, and the words of its founder Dorothy Day who said, "I wanted life and I wanted the abundant life. I wanted it for others too." (from 'The Long Loneliness').

We recently returned from three years of service in South America with Maryknoll Lay Missioners. During that time, Steve worked with a small farmer's cooperative and in a community beekeeping project. I (Laura) worked with a woman's organization to end domestic violence and serve women in need. Steve and I have been married sixteen years, and met while participating in a one-year volunteer program in inner-city Hartford, CT. Steve is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame (1995), and I am a graduate of Swarthmore College (1995), and the University of Connecticut School of Social Work (1997). Steve and I are life-long, active Catholics who have the common hope of living our faith and exploring and promoting justice: right relationships with God, among people and with the natural world.
